Re: [IAC#RG] Lockdown 4.0 : Incompetent relaxations designed to spread disease

Col. Guptaji, To encourage/appreciate/praise the mistake of announcing lockdown 1.0 without notice, without ensuring that migrant labourers will get their wages to stay put or allowed to return home, is beyond my comprehension. I have family members in with services. I have the utmost respect for the office of the PM. But, mistakes have to be acknowledged....and corrected.

What is your hidden agenda?

Now that Central Govt. has thrown in the towel in the fight against COVID-19 and handed over the responsibility to the States, I can make the following SCIENTIFIC observations (see attached images at end of my email)

1. Mr. Modi has obviously realised that this virus is going to run for at least another 2 months and he has nothing new left to say. (Other members have already commented on how hollow and full of bombastic rhetoric his past 2 speeches have been).

2. Mr. Modi has also realised  that its better to be like Rahul Gandhi and take potshots at opposition Governments from a distance for failing to control COVID-19 without taking responsibility.

3. That India's official (but rigged and downplayed) numbers have reached  5,000+ new infections per day (screen shot attached).

4. That our proprietary AI-driven indicators at IIM Ahmedabad show that the USA achieved its infection peak on 10-April-2020 and the number of daily infections is dropping daily there (albeit slowly) for the past 45 days. In India, the peak is still some time away (however, India's official statistics cannot be trusted and are downplayed, like China does, by a factor of at least 12 through systematic incentivization to downplay cases and deaths)

5. The recent Data driven research from the USA (New York) shows that there are 20 asymptomatic infections for every reported case. In New York, the most badly affected metro city of USA, rapid antibody tests there estimate that 20% of the population is infected. Similar (very confidential tests under NCDC using controversial Chinese rapid kits) mass tests carried out in Mumbai's slums of Dharavi, Antop Hill, Mohammed Ali Road, Lower Parel areas etc recently show that only 4% of the population is asymptomatic or has encountered the virus. This is disturbing because it shows India is very far away from the herd immunity levels of 65-70% infections needed.

CONCLUSION : The USA has adopted a strategic policy of ACCELERATING the spread of the virus and they could achieve "PEAK" transmission in only 22 days of Phase-2. In India despite 70 days of painful Lockdown we will not achieve PEAK. After 45 days of PEAK (on 10-April-2020) and with a sustained DECLINE in transmission rate the USA can consider easing up on (nominal) Lockdown restrictions and open their country up. On the other hand the RASCAL SCIENTIFICALLY ILLITERATE "PROSTITUTE" IAS officers in MHA and MoHFW are relaxing restrictions and opening up the Indian workplaces when the disease is at the early stages of the most dangerous and prolonged stage 3 and is ACCELERATING STEEPLY.

God save this country from such IAS fools in our Ministries. What "steel frame" is this IAS, when they are as weak as rubber bands ?

Hello Gupta

There is no much difference between bigots who can only shout 'Allah hu Akbar' or 'Modi hu Akbar' when they don't have anything else to say.

If you miss it the email from Shriman Ravi was about corupt prostittute IAS officer who are mislead overworked senior citizen one-man Rambo army Mr Modi into making wrong decisions.

Simply because you cannt find mistake with the graphs and statistics by Ravi Sir, it must not mean that you can start questioning motives of co-members and start demanding they to go Amrika or to Pakistan.

Also Gupta why you don't go to Baniastan (West Gujarat) and stay there permanently ? Hindustan is not your country because you are a unHindu Bania or Teli/OBC.

Re: [IAC#RG] Popularity

Dear Prof Natarajan

I have no idea what your domain of expertise is or as regards your claim to an academic title.

It would help if I knew about your published work so that I could better appreciate the advice you are signalling to me.

BTW, I have no desire for popularity of any kind. I am normally an intensely private person wrapped in my academic and research and I hardly post on such mailing lists dispute being an IAC subscriber since 2008.

with best wishes

The virtues and toxicities of popularity

There is a saying in Tamil that too much of anything is harmful. Even nectar turns poisonous beyond a point. Perhaps popularity falls under the category.

Our daily experience shows that this applies to most good things of life. When a child badly wants a toy, he is in ecstasy when he gets it. But after playing with it for a while very he loses interest in it and throws it away.  A person with a sweet tooth enjoys a delicacy up to a certain quantity. Beyond that he doesn't wish to consume any more of it. I call it the Limit Theory (there is actually such a theory based on which Engineering Structures are designed), or in business parlance, what the traffic will bear. Of course, there are exceptions. My daughter never lost her interest in her family of dolls. She had a name for each of them and never discarded a single doll when a new one was bought. Now and then her dolls received some corporal punishment. Sometimes a limb or ear went missing, and occasionally it was beheaded, but the doll never left the family. At some point in time the missing part was restored and the torn dress was repaired or renewed.

Popularity is something we all seek secretly or publicly. It is a common weakness. Very rarely have I come across a person who does not love popularity. Many of them also mistake plain flattery for popularity. Some of them of course try to impress others by declaring that they don't care for popularity. Some bosses specially do. It may not show on their faces but secretly they enjoy it. Junior colleagues compete to lay it thick in the presence of the boss and have a good laugh when he leaves the scene. This behaviour is cultivated when at school. In the continual rating system, a teacher has tremendous discretion. The students do not waste a moment in humouring him for a few more marks. I had a Professor who was known for being soft and good-natured. He never chided us. We thought that he would be an easy prey to flattery. When we tried to try our skill on him, he simply removed his hearing aid to deliver us a lesson in good behaviour. We gave up.

Popularity is not a dirty word. We all need a dose of it for motivation. It feels good. To that extent it is certainly a virtue. But it should be the result of our genuine behaviour or action. To act for the sake of cheap popularity would be a mistake. That is a temptation one must avoid. We need to be bold enough to call a spade a shovel. Never mind if someone thinks you are not being polite. A foul language must be avoided, but there are ways of making your mind known in a subtle way.

Seeking popularity for its own sake, ignoring the ground realities is a behaviour we exhibit now and then. I must confess that I have been occasionally guilty of such conduct. I simply get carried away, and make promises beyond my competence. I suppose it is just a heady behaviour in excitement blinded by an illusion of omnipotence. Very soon the monumental folly is exposed with loss of face and  retraction. Why does this happen?  It is toxicity. Such behaviour can be explained away when one has imbibed an overdose of the hard stuff and become intoxicated. However, it is difficult to imagine that a tea-totaller can exhibit the same behaviour, unless toxicity of popularity has induced him to act in that manner.

Conclusion: Popularity is a virtue, but don't go on an overdrive.

N. Natarajan

Re: [IAC#RG] PM MODI's SPEECHES AND BROKEN PROMISES ARE RECYCLED HOT AIR

Like Mr. Aires Rodrigues, I too don't like to listen to our Honorable PM. But I did on May 12th, and for the first 35 minutes, I thought I was listening to him addressing the country from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
I was hoping that he would directly announce some tangible relief for the 'collarless labour', (as distinct from the blue and white-collar workers). The huge numbers of collarless workers didn't seem to figure anywhere in the Governments efforts to control the virus and the calamitous consequences of that oversight is visible even 50 days after lockdown was announced.
I feel sad that my instinct reacts in this way, being brought up to keep to one's given word.

Dr. Rajan

Subject: [IAC#RG] PM MODI's SPEECHES AND BROKEN PROMISES ARE RECYCLED HOT AIR

There is rightly a sense of disbelief and a trust deficit with those in Power.  At that 2014 election rally at Merces in Goa after promising 'Acche din' Narendra Modi gave us an assurance and vowed that money stashed away in Swiss banks would be brought back and 15 lakhs would be credited into everyone's bank account. Obviously, a forlorn hope and disappointment for the many and a broken promise by a PM who knew full well that he had no intention of keeping or capable of honouring. I have stopped listening to any of his blabbering as it always leads to disappointment and frustration. It is always hot air and much ado about nothing.

However, when it was announced at short notice that the Prime Minister was going to address the nation on 12th May at 8 pm at the height of a grave and worrying pandemic, I chose to be glued to listen to what he had to say with a hope that he had finally found something worthwhile to communicate.

After half an hour into his discourse, I could not figure out what the hell he wished to communicate. As it was a damp squib, a much ado about nothing, I decided to hit the pillow after hearing that he was planning a 20 lakh crore cash stimulus to prop up a failing economy, without revealing the source of that money. It all sounded a repeat of his 2014 election stunt at Merces.

India's limp along Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has long lost the plot and needs to be replaced by someone who can think out of the box with vision, economic policies and correctly targeted investment with full transparency and zero tolerance to corruption. This is vital and urgently required to chart India's road to financial recovery especially in view of the current COVID-19 raging pandemic.

But there is no hope whatsoever that our polity and political turf will ever improve. It is only further deteriorating and awfully decaying by the day. The unacceptable antics and behavior of some of our politicians in recent times has turned it into a despised profession and looked upon with disdain and held in low esteem by the very people that they are meant to serve.

William Hazlitt a great essayist and English philosopher, observed that ''some persons make promises for the pleasure of breaking them''. PM Modi's track record perfectly fits this description. John D. Rockefeller, the powerful business magnate and philanthropist believed in the sacredness of a promise, that a man's word should be as good as his bond, that character- not wealth or power or position- is of supreme worth.

Some years ago, Supreme Court Judges B.N.Agarwal and G.S.Singhvi had observed that even God cannot save our country from such politicians. Amen
